New technology from the United States of America frequently allows early decay and white fillings due for replacement to be treated without drilling and often without local anaesthesia. So there is no need for that dribbly numb feeling for some time after treatment.
Air abrasion employs a stream of fine particles propelled by air under pressure to gently cut away tooth or white filling material. It’s a little like sandblasting.
The equipment also has other benefits such as when placing crowns. Gently sandblasting and roughening crowns and inlays immediately before cementing them in place roughens the surface of the restoration and significantly improves the strength of the glue between the tooth and the restoration.
